Colostrum
- ✔ Optimal newborn health: Giving your newborn calf the right amount of colostrum of the right quality is crucial to ensure a healthy start in life.
- ✔ Quality assurance tools: Use tools like a refractometer or densimeter to assess and confirm colostrum quality and ensure it meets the necessary standards for calf well-being.
- ✔ Timely supply: Give colostrum immediately after birth, preferably within 2 hours, to maximize its effectiveness in providing the newborn calf with essential nutrients and antibodies.
- ✔ Breed-specific recommendations: Tailor the amount of colostrum based on the breed, with 4 liters recommended for larger breeds and 3 liters for smaller breeds to optimize nutrition for each calf's specific needs.

Reducing calf mortality
Calf mortality is a worldwide animal welfare problem and can be very costly for the farmer. The incidence rate is between 2-20% with the majority of farms experiencing calf mortality of 5-8%.
Numerous studies show that a well-developed calving management strategy of monitoring and handling calving and the first year of the calf’s life can help dramatically decrease calf mortality.
Calf mortality is a multifactorial problem, which may be handled by focusing on some very critical points in time over the first year of the calf’s life:
1
Pre calving
- Designated calving areas
- High level of hygiene
- Optimal calving management to handle Dystocia
2
First hours
- Feed the right amount of quality colostrum
- Monitoring and recording
3
Growing up
- Avoid stress during weaning
- Check frequently for pneumonia
