Handle With Care
Today’s guidelines on animal welfare are based on 5 important freedoms from “The Brambell Report” in 1965:
1
Freedom from hunger and thirst: access to fresh water and food
2
Freedom from discomfort: appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable rest area
3
Freedom from pain, injury and disease: prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment
4
Freedom to engage in -normal behavior: sufficient space, appropriate facilities and the company of conspecifics
5
Freedom from fear and stress by ensuring conditions and treatment that counteract mental distress
At Freedom 5, it's important that the farmer, staff and veterinarian carefully consider how they handle animals both in everyday life and especially in situations associated with stress and pain. The trend in agriculture is towards large farms, automation and the use of robots, which decreases the daily contact between animals and humans, which can result in animals that are more fearful when handled. Therefore, getting animals used to positive human contact from an early age will benefit welfare, safety and production results.
- Shorter milking time
- Less teat injuries
- Better tolerance in stressful situations
- Fewer work-related injuries
- Better milk quality and milk yield
However, stressful situations cannot be avoided when restraining or moving the animal. KRUUSE offers different products for these purposes, but we strongly encourage the farmer to always choose the mildest form of restraint.
