Penrose drains can be successfully used in wounds that cannot be completely débrided and in the presence of residual foreign material, massively contaminated tissue, questionably viable tissue and fluid-filled dead spaces. 
NB: The diameter (Ø) of the drain is the measurement when the drain is round and not pressed flat.
